Understanding what Gifbox is
Gifbox is a platform for uploading, hosting, sharing and discovering short, usually animated photos and videos (“GIFs”). It also provides one or more developer APIs which allow developers to integrate Gifbox functionality into other applications. Some content shared on the platform may lead to external websites that are not hosted by us. See section 7 of the shared Terms, “Other linked websites”.

Your content and the licence you grant us
You retain ownership of the GIFs and other Content you upload to Gifbox. Because Gifbox is a service for sharing and distributing Content, by uploading Content you grant us (to the extent you have the right to do so) a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence, transferable and sublicensable only as needed to operate and promote the Service, to host, store, reproduce, adapt (for example, to generate optimized formats and thumbnails), publicly display and distribute that Content. This includes making Content available through our public interfaces and APIs, including the Embed API, Compatibility API and any native Gifbox API, and granting API users the limited rights described in the Developer API section below.
This licence ends when you delete the Content or your account, except that: (a) we may retain Content for a limited period in backups or where required by law; and (b) an API user may continue to use a cached copy only until these Terms require them to refresh or remove it. Ending this licence does not require us to retrieve copies that other people lawfully downloaded or made outside the Service before deletion.
AI-generated content
Where Gifbox asks you to disclose whether uploaded Content is AI-generated, you agree to provide accurate disclosures.
Developer API
These Developer API terms apply whenever you access or use an application programming interface or other automated interface provided by Gifbox, including the Embed API, Compatibility API and any native Gifbox API (collectively, the “APIs”). An application, website, service or other product that uses an API is an “Integration”. Content and metadata returned by an API are “API Content”.
Limited API and content licence
Subject to these Terms and our current API documentation, we grant you a limited, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable and non-sublicensable licence, for as long as we permit you to use the APIs, to:
- access the APIs through their documented interfaces;
- display and distribute API Content to end users only as part of your Integration;
- cache API Content as permitted below; and
- make technical transformations reasonably necessary to display API Content, such as resizing, transcoding or generating thumbnails.
You may use the APIs in commercial or monetized Integrations, subject to the restrictions below. We and our licensors retain all rights not expressly granted to you. API Content may belong to users or other third parties. We grant rights in API Content only to the extent that we are permitted to do so, and we do not guarantee that API Content is accurate, lawful, non-infringing or suitable for your intended use.
Attribution and notices
You must provide attribution to Gifbox where our API documentation requires it and where attribution is technically feasible. You must not remove or obscure attribution, provenance information, rights-management information or other notices included with an API response or required by our documentation.
Caching and removals
You may cache API Content only as reasonably necessary for the performance and operation of your Integration. You must refresh cached metadata at least once every 24 hours. If our API documentation permits a longer caching period, the requirements in this section control.
You must promptly stop using and remove API Content from your cache and Integration when:
- an API returns a 404 or otherwise indicates that the API Content is no longer available;
- we notify you that the API Content must be removed; or
- you otherwise become aware that the API Content is unavailable or unlawful.
API keys and security
You must keep API keys and other credentials confidential, use reasonable measures to prevent unauthorized access, and notify us promptly if you know or suspect that a credential has been compromised. You are responsible for activity carried out using credentials issued to you. You must not sell, transfer, sublicense, publish or provide another person with standalone access to an API key or the APIs.
Prohibited uses
You must comply with our current API documentation, technical restrictions, rate limits and applicable law. You must not, directly or indirectly:
- resell API Content or offer a standalone service that resells or provides access to the APIs;
- create or distribute a standalone or bulk archive, downloadable dataset or substitute database of API Content;
- use the APIs or API Content to build or operate a standalone service whose primary purpose is to replace or replicate Gifbox’s GIF discovery or hosting service;
- scrape Gifbox outside the documented APIs, circumvent technical safeguards or access controls, evade rate limits, or attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Service;
- use the APIs or API Content for model training or dataset creation without our prior written permission;
- use the APIs or API Content for biometric analysis, facial recognition or surveillance;
- make substantive edits, adaptations or remixes of API Content unless you have separate permission from the relevant rights holder;
- use the APIs to distribute malware, generate abusive or excessive traffic, misrepresent the source of API Content, or facilitate unlawful, fraudulent or deceptive activity; or
- remove or obscure attribution, provenance information, rights-management information or other notices.
API changes, availability and enforcement
We may set and change technical requirements and rate limits, and may change, throttle, suspend or discontinue any API or feature. We do not promise that an API or any API Content will always be available, uninterrupted, error-free or backward compatible.
We may suspend or revoke API access where we reasonably believe that you have breached these Terms, a credential has been compromised, your use creates a security risk or excessive load, suspension is required by law, or your use threatens the Service or its users. Where applicable law requires notice or an opportunity to appeal, we will provide it.
When your API access or these API licences end, you must stop accessing the APIs and promptly remove cached API Content. Any provisions that by their nature should continue to apply, including provisions concerning responsibility and accrued obligations, will survive.
